Assessment & Certification
There is no written exam. You are assessed continuously by your trainer through practical demonstrations and short question-and-answer sessions during the day. On successful completion you receive an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate, fully accredited by the FAIB (First Aid Industry Body) and valid for three years.
To stay qualified, simply retake the one-day EFAW course before your certificate expires. The HSE also strongly recommends an annual half-day refresher to keep skills current.

EFAW is ideal for lower-risk workplaces such as offices, shops and small teams. If your first aid needs assessment points to a higher-risk environment — construction, manufacturing, warehousing or larger sites — you may need the full three-day First Aid at Work course. Existing FAW certificate holders can requalify on the two-day FAW Refresher, and if you have a group of staff to train we can bring any course to your workplace with in-house first aid training.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is EFAW enough for my workplace?
For most low-risk workplaces, yes. The HSE expects you to complete a first aid needs assessment: small, low-risk teams are typically covered by an EFAW-trained first aider, while higher-risk or larger workplaces usually need staff holding the full three-day First Aid at Work qualification.
Do I need FAW or EFAW?
EFAW is a one-day course covering emergency life support and common injuries. FAW is a three-day course that adds fractures, head, chest and spinal injuries, and major illnesses such as heart attack, stroke and asthma. If in doubt, tell us about your workplace and we’ll advise — we run both weekly in Liverpool.
How long is the certificate valid?
Three years from the course date. Retake the one-day course before it expires to stay qualified, and consider an annual refresher as recommended by the HSE.
Does this course count towards an SIA licence?
Yes — EFAW meets the first aid requirement for SIA door supervisor and security guard licence applications and renewals.
Can you train a group at our workplace?
Yes. We deliver EFAW on-site across Liverpool and the North West for groups of up to 12 people at £395 + VAT per day — usually the best value option for five or more staff.
