Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mental health first aider a legal requirement?
Not currently — but the HSE expects employers to consider mental health within their duty of care, and thousands of UK employers now train designated mental health first aiders alongside physical first aiders as best practice.
How is this different from a physical first aid course?
Instead of CPR and bandages, you learn to spot the early signs of poor mental health, hold a confident, non-judgemental conversation, and signpost colleagues to the right professional support — plus how to respond in a mental health crisis.
How many mental health first aiders should we have?
A common approach mirrors physical first aid: at least one trained person per site or team, with more in larger or higher-pressure workplaces. We can help you work out sensible cover for your headcount.
Is there an exam?
There is a straightforward multiple-choice assessment at the end of the course — no essays or role-play exams. Your trainer prepares you fully during the two days.
How long is the qualification valid?
The Qualsafe Level 3 Award is valid for three years. We recommend refresher training before expiry to stay current with best practice.
